Duke Met Santa

As you can probably imagine, we talk about Santa a lot at our house lately. Ryan and I figured out that the whole “Santa’s watching” bit was highly effective against bad behavior in early November, so at least 60% of the time, it’s us bringing him up. Anyway, Duke's been hoarding wishlist items for the last month or so and he got really amped when I suggested that we could actually meet him and have a quick little chit-chat.

And he practiced man. He got his speed talk down to a science. "'mote controlled excavator, monster trucks, a saw, a screwdriver, a toy drill, a 'mote controlled excavator, monster trucks...." all in 15 seconds flat.

Well, per my typical poor planning MO, I failed twice. I took him to a parade to see Santa and that's where I learned that seeing him scoot by on a sleigh shaped float wasn't good enough. So then I took Duke to a random place where I saw Santa hanging out, but he wasn't there when we showed up.

But then, small towns came in clutch. Lake Ann had their tree lighting ceremony on Sunday and Santa showed up in a mf fire truck, which is like, two of Duke’s dreams coming true.

However, please do refer to the photo above. Duke adamantly refused to say one damn word to Santa. Instead, he covered his face with a plastic fireman's hat and giggled nervously while I coaxed him into at least making eye contact.

Totally could have been worse though. Duke is three and this is the first time I've ever taken him to see Santa, and if nerves are the worst of it - cool. He didn't cry, but I think he came close when we walked away and Ryan was like, "hey man, Santa doesn't know what you want.....because you didn't tell him."

As we walked to the car, he got back to reciting feverishly: "'mote controlled excavator, monster trucks, a saw, a screwdriver, a toy drill, a 'mote controlled excavator, monster trucks...."

Good thing Santa's always watching, right?
Anyway, we're going to write Santa a letter this week and try to rectify things. But I have a feeling he knows.

Hey, happy Wednesday you guys. Halfway there.
