Chinatown in San Francisco March 2020

Hey there guys. It's good to be back, although things changed rapidly and dramatically while I was vacationing, and I'm glad to be with my family.

I'm going to do a larger post on my California trip, but wanted to get a post up in the meantime. In the meantime, you can see more pictures from the trip on my instagram, linked here.

I could not have foreseen how things would amp up in just a few days. Sara and I landed in San Francisco and had two fairly normal days where we could go into restaurants and eat inside, and go to public places and find them open. Then on Saturday, Christy flew in to meet us, and all kinds of shit hit the fan. Sara and I both got disconcerting emails from our bosses and everything around us effectively shut down. The next morning, we hopped in our car and headed down the coast. That was our plan anyway, but it worked out especially well. The parks and beaches were all open and empty, so we did a ton of hiking and sightseeing.

It was pretty chilly -- about 55° -- and we got intermittent rain most days, so for a lot of reasons, the vacation wasn't exactly what we were expecting, but it made for such an interesting California experience. Cold and rainy is NOT how I imagined California - haha. And until we got into LA, everything was pretty much deserted, but even then, traffic was significantly less than we were anticipating. We stopped at a couple of boardwalks and piers and found them completely empty. Silent amusement parks proved the most eerie. We also never experienced stereotypical LA traffic and when we flew out of LAX, the airport was empty. I got through LAX security in less than 5 minutes.

The sign in the window says "If you're reading this, GO HOME! And order Bev online"

Sand Dollar Beach Big Sur California

This is Sand Dollar Beach in Big Sur. If you ever want your socks knocked off, drive down Hwy 1 through Big Sur. I'd recommend waiting for warm weather and renting a convertible. It's so magically beautiful. You'll also randomly drive by houses that make you very aware that some people make way more money than you. The 17 Mile Drive leading into Pebble Beach will do that too if you're into that. We drove by a house for sale that is listed for a cool 30 mil.

If I ever get my life together and catch up on the 10 billion emails / updates that happened while I was gone, I'll put together a more comprehensive post. Maybe in a few days. That inbox is seriously deep and I'll be working from home with a toddler. That part should be a total blast.
